The Complexity of Understanding People As They Live

We play strange, changing roles in each other's lives. The power of our personal narrative is so strong that we're often oblivious to these roles, especially the ones outside our close circles.

The paper cutout and the negative space of a man hint at how absurd it is to attach a whole individual to one static image, even though that is exactly what we do with first impressions and labels.

We are generous enough with ourselves to think of our identity in terms of process, not product. This artwork questions why we don't afford the same consideration to those around us. When open-ended interactions are kept at the center of everything, social landscapes change and conversations are no longer scripted social encounters.
