The Complexity of Understanding People As They Live

We play strange roles in each other's lives that are always changing. The power of our own narrative is so strong that we're often oblivious to these roles, especially ones outside our close circles.
I paired the hand and paper cutout in this picture with with the negative space of a man to illustrate the absurdity of attaching a whole individual to one static image, even though that is exactly what we do with first impressions, labels, or conclusive statements about others.
I noticed that I am generous enough with myself to think of my identity in terms of process, not product, so I want to afford the same consideration to those around me, even to strangers sitting across the room.
When I keep open-ended interactions at the center of everything, I feel my whole social landscape changing, since without them, conversations are basically scripted social encounters.
